6 Easy Ways to Pamper a Senior Cat

Is your kitty aged seven or older? If so, Fluffy is approaching—or perhaps already in—her golden years. While you probably won’t notice any immediate changes in your cat’s appearance or behavior, your feline friend will slow down as she ages. A good diet, clean litterbox, and regular veterinary care will still be crucial to your pet’s health and well-being, but your kitty will also benefit from some extra TLC. Read on as a Raleigh, NC vet lists some ways to keep your cat happy, comfy, and purring as she grows older.

It may not seem possible, but cats somehow manage to sleep even more than usual in their golden years. Fluffy could spend up to 20 hours a day napping. Offer your drowsy pet lots of soft beds, including at least one in front of a window with a good view.

Just like people, cats often develop vision problems as they age. Keep a nightlight on, so Fluffy can get around more easily after dark.

Senior Facilities

Fluffy may have difficulty getting in and out of a litterbox with high walls, so look for one that’s easy for her to manage. If your home has multiple floors, keep extras on every level, so your kitty doesn’t have to use the stairs as often.

Senior cats sometimes have trouble jumping up to their favorite spots, or hopping onto beds or couches. Get your kitty pet ramps, or arrange footstools so that she can use them as stairs. If you see Fluffy about to jump on or off something, give her a gentle lift. Just make sure those cute little paws are touching down before you let go.

Regular play sessions are very beneficial to kitties. The activity Fluffy gets pouncing on her little mouse toy will be great for her physically. Playing also offers your furry pal beneficial mental stimulation. This is great for your feline friend’s mind, and can help reduce or prevent the cognitive decline some cats experience as they age.

Make sure Fluffy feels loved and pampered by paying lots of attention to her. Talk to her, pet her, and let her cuddle with you. Senior cats are super cute, and often very affectionate!
