Summer Safety for Dogs

The dog days of summer are almost here! While Fido often enjoys the warmer weather, the hotter months do bring some specific hazards for our canine pals. Below, a Wake Forest, NC veterinarian offers summertime safety tips for dogs.

Summer is a prime time for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Make sure to keep up on Fido’s parasite control products! We also recommend doing daily tick checks on your furry buddy.

Heat can be very dangerous for pets. Fido should always have plenty of fresh water. If your canine pal has a yard to patrol, make sure he has suitable shade and shelter.

Fido can easily overheat on a vigorous walk or hike in summer. On really hot days, walk him in the morning and evening, when it’s cooler out, and be careful not to overexert him.

Keep Fido Home

We know, many people like taking their dogs out and about, but in hot weather, your beloved pet is much better off staying home, in rooms cooled by fans or AC. If you do take Fido with you, don’t ever leave him in a parked car. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach deadly levels in just a few minutes, and keeping the engine and AC on is very dangerous.

Paw Care

Have you ever walked barefoot on hot tar? Ouch! This isn’t any more fun for Fido than it is for you! If it’s too hot for you to go barefoot, it’s too hot for your dog. Keep your pet on soft surfaces when it’s really hot out.

Pool Safety

Going swimming? Be sure not to leave your pooch unattended near water. Give Fido swimming lessons if he needs them, and make sure he has basic doggy obedience commands like Sit, Stay, and Come down pat before taking him to a pool, lake, or beach. If you’re visiting a pool, immediately show your dog where the stairs are, so he can get out if he falls in. Headed for the beach? Keep your pup away from strong currents and wakes.

Many dogs are terrified of storms. Bring Fido in when the skies darken. If he is scared, put him in a quiet room, and turn a radio on to mask the noise.
