Fun Ways to Help Fido Beat the Heat

The dog days of summer are officially upon us! Heat can be pretty tough on our canine pals. After all, Fido is wearing a fur coat! Read on as a local Wake Forest, NC vet discusses keeping your furry buddy cool this summer.

Kiddie Pool

One easy—and adorable—way to let Fido cool off is to get him a kiddie pool. Don’t forget to get some cute pictures of your pup splashing around!

Cool Treats

Who doesn’t enjoy ice cream on a hot day? Treat your four-legged buddy to some doggy ice cream, which you can find at most pet stores or supermarkets. If you like cooking, you can also make your furry bff homemade treats. Look online for recipes. Just be sure to only use dog-safe ingredients.

Summer Schedule

In hot weather, walk your dog in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out. Also, don’t encourage Fido to run and play during the hottest hours of the day. Save that fun game of fetch for evening!

Cool Summer ‘Do

If Fido has thick fur, he may be more comfortable with a cool summer haircut. Check with your vet first, however, as clipping isn’t a suitable option for every pooch.

If your dog likes swimming, indulge him with a trip to a local pool or lake. Just be sure to put safety first. Keep Fido away from deep water and areas with strong currents or wakes, and never leave him near water unattended. Also, if you are going to a pool, make sure your furry friend knows where the stairs are.

Keeping your dog hydrated is very important! Make sure that Fido always has plenty of cool, clean water. Your canine companion may appreciate a pet fountain.

Hammock Bed

Hammock beds tend to stay cooler than regular beds, as they allow air to move beneath them. Get Fido a comfy summer bed.

Keep a close eye on your furry friend, and watch for signs that he may be starting to overheat. Panting and drooling are two early indications. If Fido seems too hot, immediately give him water and take him to a cool area. If symptoms persist, contact your vet right away.
